Bring it on!

07Nov08

Hello and welcome to the first post of thCensorshipe struggle in support of Ali Baher! Ali is a student at the Hebrew University who has been kicked out from his dorm room, and is facing a possible suspension from his studies, simply because he refused to shake hands with Shimon Peres, President of the State of Israel. You can read more about it in the Story section above.

The latest update is that Ali is appealing to the University against the decision to evict him from his room. We’ll be sure to update you as soon as there is any progress! Click on “how to help” to get it on the action.

Hmmm. My question is, did he refuse to shake Peres’s hand because of Peres’s silly ideas about “The New Middle East” and the possibility that Israeli concessions will actually bring peace or because he’s Jewish? In the first case, I understand but it’s still not nice or politically correct and in the second – throw the guy out of his dorm; anti-Semitism isn’t “in” in Israel this year.

    Hi Alissa,

The reason Ali refused to shake hands with Mr Peres is the president’s (at least formal) responsibility for the 1996 Qana bombing. So it’s neither of the two.
However, the argument is not whether Ali or Peres are right or wrong – but rather if they should be allowed to say whatever they like. Naturally, Mr Peres’s nationality had nothing to do with the incident and both Palestinians and Jews are working closely to restore Ali’s rights.
